It took a lot of time to develop the best Principles of Learning to the best form of them that we could. It was interesting to look at all of the different ways we could combine sentences. And we got to work with almost everyone in the class. We got to look at ideas different ways and we learned to take risks. We got to vote for changes and everyone was included. Overall, it was a lot of fun and challenging.
We started by discussing the English 12 First People’s Principles of Learning. They are about including people and being respectful and making the most of your learning opportunities. It was written by some Canadian Indigenous people to help students in Grade 12 learn. We wanted to develop our own because it will help us learn and set guidelines for what we do in class time. Some of ours were similar to the First People’s Principles and some were unique to us. This was because some of the ideas like respect were in both because those are ideas that you don’t need to work very hard to understand.
We all committed to these Principles of Learning. It makes us feel good because you have guidelines when you’re learning and everyone knows what to do. It makes for a safer learning environment and help us have expectations for each other. It makes us feel good.

- Being curious can help you be open to all kinds of knowledge
- Respect the fact that different people learn in different ways
- Your learning choices affect others
- Take risks and learn from them
- Building a community and being part of it requires effort, commitment and teamwork
- Include and respect others in your learning community
- Listen to others and accept feedback and comments thoughtfully
- Learning with Patience makes content easier to understand
- Embrace each others’ ideas and your own
- Take pride in your learning community
- Interconnectedness between all of the learners in the room is important
- Elders and youth can learn from each other
