January 4, 2015

Dear Division 16,

When we celebrate the start of a new year, we often talk of New Year’s Resolutions, which are a commitment we make to ourselves.  Generally, they are decisions we make that will help make us happier, healthier or to achieve some goal.

For your assignment today, please read the article at the link below to learn a unique way some people are approaching their New Year’s Resolutions – by committing to do a single thing every day of the year.  In this case, it is to take a picture and post it each day of the year.  Other people have made commitments to other creative goals.

In your response, please answer ONE of the following questions:

  1. Did you make a New Year’s Resolution?  If so, what is it?  How did you decide on that goal?  What will you do to achieve your goal?  Does anyone else share your goal?
  2. If you had to choose one thing to do every year, what would it be?  What do you think you would learn from doing that same thing every day in 2016?

Just a reminder – please ALWAYS answer in full sentences and ensure you have answered all parts of the question.

I look forward to your responses!

Happy New Year,

  1. DancingPorcupine

    1. My new years resolution is to keep commitments that I make to myself. I decided on that because I often don’t commit to things that don’t affect other people because no one will care if I don’t do them except me. To acheive my goal I will try to get things done right away so that I won’t decide later that I don’t feel like doing it. I have not talked to anyone else that has the same resulution as me.

  2. Amethyst

    1. I did make a New Years resolution this year. My New Years resolution is to go to bed a bit earlier than I did in 2015. I made that my resolution because I have been going to bed really late and I’m an early bird but I can’t sleep in at all so I can only go to bed earlier and plus I’m always quite tired. I have to start doing everything earlier like pack my lunch for the next day and then start getting ready for bed early because even if I’m ready I don’t have to go to bed right when I’m done getting ready so I could do my teeth early then read for longer than I do currently. I don’t think that anyone shares the same goal as me.

  3. PG Dinosaur

If I had to do one thing every day for the rest of 2016, I would choose listening to a new song. I think this would expand my knowledge of music. I also think that it would expand my knowledge of different cultures and places around the world. You can learn pieces of other languages from music. First, I would listen to modern U.K. rap music. I’m interested in this because I like listening to music in the English language (currently), and I’d like to listen to rap that’s not from a place around here. Most importantly, I would pinpoint the exact type of music I like. This will help me in the future because it something that I can enjoy, that I can talk about for hours, and something I can share with other people.

    • dickensdiv16

This sounds like a great, and very achievable goal, PG Dinosaur! I like how you connected it to relationships and discussions with others. I’d bet that kind of focus would give you an amazing breadth of knowledge and you’d probably find it hard to stop at just one song!

  4. smeagaleater10

#2 If I had to decide to do one important action every day until the start of 2017, it would be playing the piano. I am already decent at playing the piano, I have learned plenty of songs like Jingle Bells and Silent Night in two months. If I practiced for a year I would become really disciplined and creative piano player.

    • dickensdiv16

You’re right! Learning a new skill does take a lot of discipline and it’s much easier to persevere when you’ve had some success! I love hearing about new learning, especially in creative ways!

  5. PandaTush

    2. If I had to do something every day in 2016, I would have a conversation with someone I never spoke to before. During recess and lunch, I would approach a student and ask them a question. It would eventually lead into a conversation. I would choose to do this beecause your can learn so much from one person. Everywhere you go you can learn something new. And I would also make a lot of friends. I could learn a word from a different language. I could learn interesting facts about everything. And if I don’t get a fact or a new word, I could learn something new about them. The possibilities are endless. On a trip once, I played a board game with a new friend and I learned some amazing facts I never knew. And now that a hold the knowledge, I can pass it on to others and so on and so on. And by the end of the year, I could know a lot more then I used to. Did you know that Singapore is the cleanest country in the world?

    • dickensdiv16

This sounds like a goal that would benefit individuals as well as the community. Great thinking, PandaTush. I really like how you included an example of a time this has worked for you in the past!

  6. crazymemeslol123

#2 I would really like doing something the a same as last year but I wouldn’t thing it will be fun if you do the Same thing over and over again everyday I was thinking that you could do the same thing each whole year like a celebration of some sort or do something you never done berfore but it maybe can change your life when you do nothing you never been doing it will react your mind for every intense action you do will be in you forever and you will be experienced with the activity and you will probably share the experience with other people and they shall maybe test something new in there lives.

    • dickensdiv16

I like the idea of a celebration of the year. It’s true, doing the same thing every day for a year risks being boring, which is why you would have to choose wisely and make a real commitment!

  7. Crazychicken lover

I decided to memorize every section of the multiplication each day so my mathematics can get better and i can be happy and have a quick brain when we do stuff about exponets and other things that need multiplications.I chose this because i have a cousin who is really smart and in college and she told me that knowing your multiplication tables is very important and also because i was struggling on my multiplying.

    • dickensdiv16

This is a great commitment! Your cousin is right, knowing your times tables quickly can help you in a lot of higher level math! I hope others join you in this goal!

  8. super cheese cake

#1 My new year resolution is to practice my piano skill I’ve been learning piano since I was grade one and playing piano is pretty fun and it will comfort you when you feel sad. When you are upset, it will cheer you up.I chose this goal because learning piano is a cool stuff. Not everyone knows how to play piano and at least I got a instrument to play. It’s easy to learn. it sounds good too.

  9. den10@sea43

My new years resolution is to train for football harder because I often worry about that I might not be good enough to go to the NFL so every day I plan to get more exercise and play more. And no other person that I know is doing it with me except for my mom who I want to go jogging with.

    • dickensdiv16

Ah! Athletic goals are a perfect fit of fun and exercise. You have such a strong commitment to your football skills, this seems like a great goal for you. Keep up your enthusiasm!

  10. Rouge

#2. I think that if I were to do one thing every day for the year of 2016 I would want to try one new thing every day. Such as: trying a new food, talking to a new person, baking a new kind of pie, starting a new hobby, and other cool ideas to try. I think that way I would get more out of my 2016 year and I would also get to create important and unique memories. I would also write in a journal about my everyday “new” experience. This would benefit me because I would try things that I never would have ventured into before and I will have experienced things that add to my life and happiness. Then at the end of the year I would be able to look back in all detail in my journal and be able to learn from my mistakes that I tried or experienced, and I would also get to enjoy the new friendships that I have made throughout the year and then cherish them for years to come. I’m not really sure what I will learn from this goal but I know that it will open up my eyes to see more things in this world.

#2 I think what I would do every year would be to eat different type’s of food each day. I think that I would learn to not be so picky and also get a better taste for other food’s.

  12. gretchenbartlett

#1 My new years resolution is to not yell as much because my family gets really annoyed and it makes my voice sore and I lose my voice. I decided on that because I always am reminded to be quiet by my parents to stop and I need to end it. I will not be as louder by not trying to raise my voice as much because its one of the reasons why I’m so loud. No one I know shares this goal with me.

  13. Purple Pickle

One thing I would do once everyday for the rest of the year would be to get into a routine with my dog and take her out and feed her at the same time everyday because for her it would make more sense and dogs function better with routines. What i would learn from doing that everyday for the rest of 2016 would be the important knowledge of good habit because over time I would end up not having to thing about this routine and I would just do it without thinking.

  14. Shadow145

#1 My New Years Resolution Would be Reading Non fiction everyday to learn more about things that I have never knew about existed or anything that happened that I never knew.

  15. Koshka2

2# I would choose what to learn would be to: Learning how to write. I have been making a Fan Fiction. It’s base of a game I play: Vainglory. I been writing this story for about 1-2 months now. (I have been taking long breaks)
From learning this every year it could improve my write skills a lot in my life, I dunno I kinda wanna be a writer when I grow up… I mean in 2016 I new year has been born, a new to start fresh(I do that)
From doing this every day I could be more ‘created’? Also I am still a bit funny. When it’s come to write I tend to pretty much write the same thing over 1-2 In a Row. I could also say I could use a bit of help spelling…
I hope I will learn step by step.

  16. vid3o g@mer

1# I made a resolution to spend less time on my devices because if I have a project that I need to start on, it is really unnecessary to be a vid3o g@mer while I have better things to do. If I finish my work for the day, then I can relax and then be a
    vid3o g@mer.

  17. Ginger

Over the last couple of years I have made New Year’s resolutions, but not successfully kept them. I am hoping that I am more successful this year. My New Year’s resolution for 2016 is to keep a book and write something that makes me happy-every day. I think that this will help me when I am sad because I can look back in my “Happy Book” and remember all the fun and joyful times I have had. I was at my friend’s house and she told me how she had tried to keep a book of her happy memories in previous years but not succeeded, she said that she would try to keep this resolution in 2016. My friend inspired me to try and keep this goal too. To keep my goal I will leave the notebook on my desk so I don’t lose it and have a specific time each night before I go to bed so I don’t forget to write. I think that goal setting is a very important part of everybody’s life and it is good practice to make New Year’s resolutions.

  18. the DUDE

To answer question number one, my new year’s resolution is to listen and concentrate more in school so I can learn more. I decided on my goal because last year I had a school project and I didn’t listen when my teacher gave the criteria. This got me in trouble. I have now learned from that mistake, and I am listening a lot better in school. To make sure I listen, I plan to notice when I am not listening, and reel my thoughts back in to listen to what the teacher is saying. If I find myself not listening, I will say to myself, “you should be listening right now.”

  19. TechNerd

    2. My new years resolution is to come to school early every single day, of the school year. If I keep doing this every day in 2016, I will be very good at showing up early and will have very slight chances of shoeing up late next year in high school which is a good thing. Also if I keep practicing every day I will become competent and will be able to show up early every day.

  20. Joaquin

If I had to chose one thing to do every day this year, it would be to practice soccer everyday so I can get a lot better at it. I would probably learn how to do a lot of cool tricks, build my speed and skills and be able to help my team more to win games. I think that if I could commit to doing this everyday I will also learn about being focused on a goal, about following through with a promise to myself and I would feel better about my skills.

  21. iron lanturn

#2 if I had to do one thing every day of the year that would have to be drawing.drawing will improve my skills with many other things I like. I would like to make comics but I’m not good at drawing so I could achieve that. another way drawing would help is it would improve my work with a pencil back in grade three I had to do many things to fix now it’s not as bad now but I still fidget sometimes.

  22. Soccerboy123ABC

2# i think if i had to pick something i would pick to try and read 1 book everyday because then i would have a lot of knowledge on a lot of different subjects it will help me in high school in 2 years.it will also make my projects at school a lot easier because i would know a lot of things about that subject.i would also have a very good sense on which kind of books i love to read.

  23. A.ayewthelegend

#1 my resolution was to be open to new perspectives from different people. No one has shared my resolution that I know of. I will achieve this by trying to be more patient and taking my time so I don’t rush to the end right away. I decided on it because I was looking at my self in new ways and seeing how I could be a better person.

  24. The Baconator

My new year’s resolution is to improve my soccer skills. I chose this activity because it is very important to me and I love playing it so if I keep practicing I will eventually get better. Also if you are really good you might get the chance to get an amazing paying job. To achieve this goal I will practice almost every day in our basement or outside that way I can get used to playing and over time I won’t get rusty and have to relearn what I have already learned. Some people on my soccer team might be involved or do the same thing but I bet some of them don’t have basements.

  25. balloongirl123

1 my new years resolution is to sleep early because sometime I would late and can’t wake up the next day but I really need to sleep early because I have to eat breakfast and pack some stuff I need.

  26. Sr.Fruitcake

#2 I f had to do one thing every day of the year I would go to a new country. i think that it would be so diverse that you could start to see the world in a different way after having seen all kinds of different conditions and all kinds of people. It would teach you about the way people think and could also be very enjoyable. I think if you were to see that many different cultures in only one year it would be difficult to adapt to being in one place all the time, but it would make you realize and appreciate what you probably took for granted before.

  27. baconguy

#2. If I had to do something once a day all year, I would take a picture of something that day that was meaningful and had an impact on that day or on days to come. I would do this because then I could go back and see at the end of the year what it was like during the year and really see how my year went.

  28. Arctic owl

2# If i chose one thing to every day of the year it would be to write . Because i love to write all different types of stores and read them too . What i would learn from doing that every single day is that there are so many things to write about and if you think about it that then you can realize that the possibility’s are endless .
