Dear Division 16,
We are getting into the election work fast and furious! In our discussions this week we have talked a great deal about the responsibility of citizens to participate in democracy by voting or being involved in elections.
A big concern in Canada is that youth voter turnout is lower than for older adults. People often say that it is because youth don’t care about the future or are apathetic (not caring) about their communities. This article by the CBC presents a different perspective. Please read it through and answer one of the following questions.
- Do you agree with the opinion of the author of this article that it is access that is preventing youth from voting? Back up your answer with an example from your own experience.
- Do you agree that youth in Canada do not participate in their communities or don’t care about the future? Give reasons for your answer.
I look forward to your responses,
