Assignment #1 Week of May 11

Dear Division 16,

Here is the Virtues homework from Naslishah for this week:

Honouring the spirit gives our lives a sense of meaning, purpose and depth.  Honouring the spirit also means respecting the dignity of each person and being thankful for the blessings we have.  This strategy also encourages us to make time for the things we need, whether it is reflection, reverence, prayer, meditation or connecting with nature and beauty.

It also encourages us to participate in arts such as painting, dancing, singing, writing, etc.  Honouring special life events and sharing our stories helps us to connect with the meaning of our lives.  We can also honour the spirit by being of service such as volunteering for a cause or helping someone in need.  Reading or watching something meaningful can also help us find inspiration and honour our spirit.

What are some of the ways you and/or your family honour your spirit?  Please explain in a few lines.

I think that our family has many ways of honouring our spirits. We like to help each other out with chores and work, so work seems more enthusiastic. We also like to converse at meals, and talk into whole conversations about school, or even interests that we have. If my parents and family aren’t busy, we also like to play together. We play outside, usually going for walks, playing catch, or even on the playground. We love to spend time together on rainy days, we would spend the time chattering or watching movies together.

I think that my family has lots of ways to honour the spirit in our every day lives. In my family at dinner or while we make dinner we each talk about our day and our top 3 favourite things happened that day and what we are excited for tomorrow. On days when we have typical Vancouver weather we like to play board games as a family or watch movies together. We also go for walks, go swimming, or play badminton together. My family also respects time alone, usually we all go off to our rooms and will do a family activity later in the evenings.

I honor my spirit by reading a lot, and playing soccer. Reading helps my spirit with calming down and allowing me to relax. It also reminds you that there are hundreds of different ways to live life. Soccer fulfills my need for physical activity which affects my spirit by keeping healthy and fit. This important to my spirit because when you stay healthy and fit you also stay mentally healthy. My mom uses music to honor her soul, as she is a musician. My father makes things in his shop. I think this honors their spirits because it is relaxing, calming, and is a physical activity using their hands to create something.

I have many ways of honouring my spirit. I read a lot,I write a lot, and I love to draw! My family honours our spirits by asking us every day about school and did we enjoy the day. If my brother isn’t busy, he always finds time to play with me. Whenever it is a rainy day or we have to stay inside, my family always gives us fun activities to do.They always find time to listen to our problems, and share their experiences.

I think that my family has a lot of ways to honour our sprits. One of them is having family dinners with my grandpa every Sunday night. We also play games with him while dinner is being made and after we eat sometimes we listen to some of his stories instead of games. Another thing my family dose to honor our sprits is that every big holiday like a Birthday, Christmas, Easter, etc we have a family dinner or brunch and catch up give gifts if it is one of those holidays and play some board games or just hang out.

My favorite way I honor my spirit is by reading . I love reading becouse you can zone out from your surroundings and really get relaxed . I also love it becouse you can read any book you want and there are no restrictions. I have a very active imagination and when I read I can envision what the character is seeing .
I think a lot of people honor there spirits this way .

My family and me have a lot of different ways of honoring the spirit but the one that really sticks out for me is how honest we always are to each other and when one of us is upset or hurt, respecting that and treating them with kindness and tact. Every Friday we have a special chicken dinner and we go around the table and talk about the highlights of the week and the thing that didn’t go to well and then we say something we’re grateful for. ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

One experience that does not happen a lot but is one of our family’s favourite ways of honoring our spirits is when we go to a soccer game all together. Weather or not one of us is a player of if it is a pro game or just a high level local game we love to go watch and/or play. One of the things that our family loves about it is that we almost always agree and when there is argument it is quickly swept away when the play starts, It’s a way of going to a place where all our family members are doing the same thing, we are sitting back (until someone scores) and enjoying the game.

Although I have a small immediate family, I have a very large extended family. I honour the spirit by spending as much time with them as possible. I am very lucky to have a grandmother who lives close by, at UBC. We like to garden, and then make dinner together. Every summer, my Grandpa and step Grandma take me on a week long glamping (glamour camping) trip through Canada or the USA. My grandmother on my dad’s side lives in Los Angeles so we only get to see each other a few times each year. We always take grandma on a special mini vacation when we visit, like Palm Springs or San Diego. My family loves to explore new places and travel together. I think that spending time with my family and people I love and care for really helps me to honour the spirit.

My favorite way of honouring my spirit is by pursuing my passions. Every weekend I read over an hour and a half. I play soccer for over three hours, and I spend time with my family. I think when my family and we go out together, we always see or learn something new, for us that is honouring OUR spirits. When I play soccer, I find that it refreshes my mind, therefore I am more careful about what I say to my family and don’t over react. Reading helps me calm down (also works for everyone else in my family). It is an excellent way for us to fall right asleep. These are some of the ways my family and I honour our spirits.
