Dear Divisions 17 and 18,

This past weekend, the City of Vancouver held an event that happens twice a year:  The $10 tree sale.

Please read the CBC article about it using the link below, and then answer ONE of the following questions.

CBC news – Vancouver Tree Sale

  1. Do you agree with the plan to add 11,000 trees to Vancouver this year?  Give reasons for your answer.
  2. The article shared that the Point Grey neighbourhood has 28.9% tree coverage, while the Strathcona neighbourhood has only 5.9%. Why do you think that different neighbourhoods have different numbers of trees?  Use your knowledge of the city or do some further research and make some inferences!

We look forward to your responses!

    1. I agree with the idea of adding 11,000 trees to vancouver because having more tree will improve the air quality and children will have more trees to play on and it will look a lot nicer.

  2. Catzrule

I say yes because I think that since everything is becoming more and more about money and oil, there is more and more pollution. So the more trees we have, the more we can keep the air clean.

  3. YourBroZeke

Yes Because Trees are amazing! They help us by Generating Air which in a big City such as Vancouver is really good I hope to See them around (Are they Planting seeds or full trees?)

  4. 008ra

I agree with planting the 11,000 trees to Vancouver because I think that adding more trees would be crucial to keep our planet going. Trees produce oxegen which we need to survive. We use trees for everything, homes, paper, tables, canoes and so much more. Adding trees is also an awesome idea, because we really need some more. Especially at such a cheap price, because if its expensive no one will buy them.

  5. Day dreamer

    2. I think that one neighbourhood has more trees then the other becaus one might have more houses or more people so they might not have lots of space, or one neighbourhood might have more people hoou like to garden then the other one.

  6. Lam

Planting 11,000 more trees is a great idea, here is why I think so:Planting more trees would help with global warming and even maybe inspire other cities to do the same thing.

I think Strathcona has less trees than Point Grey because Strathcona is in the middle of the city where there is less space for trees.

  7. Spirit Heart

I agree with planting 11,000 trees because it gives the world better air and I love trees. Trees also provide us paper.

  8. black circle

I think that planting 11,000 trees is a good idea because it will improve air quality and Vancouver needs more trees because of development.

  9. Lightning Bolt

As Vancouver is a rich city, it has the power to build architecture across the city but since some neighborhoods are on the west or east side of Vancouver. The west side which is home to West Point Grey and others is ultra-urban, tree-line traditional combined. Which means a road or sidewalk with trees on both sides and is an ultra city like such like West End. It is also known for its beaches and parks such as Stanley Park and Spanish Banks. It’s most likely to have more tree coverage than other neighborhoods on the east side. The east which is home to Strathcona and others, In Strathcona, it’s an old neighborhood. It has a rich historic and architectural heritage. Combined with the age, it probably kept its historic nature which is why theoretically it has less tree coverage.

    1. I think that it is a good idea to add 11,000 trees in Vancouver because it will refresh and clear the air so then the people with sensitive lungs will feel better. Another reason why I think that it’s a good idea is because we will get more materials and it could be good if the animals use the trees as a habitat.

    2. I think that Strathcona has such a low percentage of tree coverage compared to Point Grey neighbourhood is because it might not have enough space or people are using trees to make too much material that is not needed.

    1. It’s a great idea to plant 11,000 trees, and here are the reasons why. It provides more shade from our hot weather in the summer, a habitat for animals to produce offspring such as birds, cleaner air for people with sensitive lungs, and tree houses for the kids to enjoy. 🙂

  12. hippodude2005

I think that having 11,000 more trees would be great for the ecosystem and i also think it would just make
Vancouver and lots of other places look and feel much more fresh and clean

  13. Amythest

I definitely agree with the plan to add 11,000 trees to Vancouver this year because it will definitely help improve the air quality in Vancouver. It will help with making our city more Green of course, and add some colour to our city which in some parts aren’t very bright.

  14. bow tie 12

I think it’s a good idea to bring 11 ,000 trees into vancouver. I think so because tree’s help the air and breathing. Last year for my food project one of the criteria was to have an suggestion for the city. My suggestion was to plant more tree’s. Tree’s also come in different shapes and sizes and there are all really pretty to have around the city. So I think that bring 11 ,000 tree’s here is a really good idea!

  15. chiefblobfish

I agree with 11,000 trees being planted because they produce air. Did you now that you breath in 9.5 tons of air every year

“Trees release oxygen when they use energy from sunlight to make glucose from carbon dioxide and water. Like all plants, trees also use oxygen when they split glucose back down to release energy to power their metabolisms. Averaged over a 24-hour period, they produce more oxygen than they use up; otherwise there would be no net gain in growth”

“A human breathes about 9.5 tons of air in a year, but oxygen only makes up about 23 percent of that air, by mass, and we only extract a little over a third of the oxygen from each breath. That works out to a total of about 740kg of oxygen per year. Which is, very roughly, seven or eight trees’ worth.”

This is a great idea because it has a lot of purpose for Vancouver and BC

  16. Timbit

I very much favor having lots of trees in Vancouver. But there are expensive and disruptive downsides to having trees that the city seems reluctant to talk about.

  17. Awesomeness

I think it is a good idea to plant 11,000 trees because trees make air so the air quality is better, it will make more places for wildlife to live, maybe make other places to decide to plant more trees too, a trees shadow that covers grass slows the evaporation process so that the grass can get more water, they stop soil from sliding off hills, and some trees provide food like, apples, oranges, cherries, lemons, limes, grapefruits, mangos, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, persimmons, and pomegranates.

  18. electroe05

Well after reading through the article and learning about this topic I found the there goal for 11,00 trees in the city is positive and negative in some ways. Some of the positives are better air quality as well as a greener feeling through out the city. Some of the negative effects in the city would be many more jobs needed to keep them up to date as well as the possibility of overgrowth making us lose valuable space in the city.

  19. Arty-choke

#1 As I’m guessing most people answered for this question, I agree that planting 11,000 trees would be a great idea seeing as Vancouver is trying g to become the greenest city. I personally love nature and greenery and I think that the more trees the better! especially since trees give us oxogen. Not only do trees help us breathe healthy, and make a nice home for wildlife, but they also make our city look beautiful and inviting, along with all these fantastic new murals in Vancouver.

  20. Spongebob

I think that it’s a good idea to add more trees to Vancouver. Trees could make the environment look better with the colors and also improves air quality. Since trees are cut down for making stuff, for example: Tables, benches, paper etc. and lots of animals have trees as their habitat, I think it’ll be a good opportunity to add trees back so the animals can find another place to rest and possibly to hunt.

  21. Flying pinguin

    [#1]
I would say yes to add 11,000 trees to Vancouver this year. Because I think that trees are I important to make the city green and keep the air clean. I thing the tree make the temperature cooler.

  22. The phantom blade

I 100 and 10 percent agree with planting a lot more trees for a couple of reasons one of them is it gives us clearer air and I know that everyone likes fresh air, my next reason is that wild life need a place to live and if we keep on taking away their territory then they won’t have a place to live and will either have to adapt to no trees or will die off and then that will affect the food chain and will probably leave more people in need of some types of food,my next is that lots of things like hiking ,bird watching, mountain biking,I know that a lot of you like to do some of those things maybe even all of them so try and keep your hobbys real and you can still do them so go and buy a tree with that extra 10 dollars in your piggy bank and go and buy /plant a tree it will help you and other people for years to come.

  23. White_heart

    1
Pro: I think planting 11 ,000 trees🌲 Is a good idea because the city would be more shady and produces more oxygen. I think and the roads streets and sidewalks would be really cool and have kids have outdoor games wouldn’t that be nice? Con: the problem is were is all the space to plant all those trees since our city is crowded and there’s. No space for all those trees and the only way is to break some space to add all those trees so my answer is not yes not no but maybe cause there’s also pros and cons

  24. Lizardman

It’s a good idea to plant 11,000 trees, because of the forest fires, and to help our air quality, and having good quality oxygen in our atmosphere will give us a better and healthier life.

  25. Pug_life

I think that planting 11,000 trees is good to do because of all the forest fires and air pollution. Trees will make Vancouver greener and add better air quality.

  26. ThePlatypusLife

I believe that there is more coverage in Point Grey than Strathcona because there is more places for trees to grow, like more parks and more grassy areas around the sidewalks. I also think that maybe there are less areas where trees have been cut down in Point Grey.

  27. Narwhalz

I think that planting 11,000 trees in Vancouver would not only help the air quality but make Vancouver a more beautiful place to live and visit. The price also is very reasonable at 10$ for one tree.

  28. mouk

Yes. I think it’s great to have lots of trees it makes better air for you to breathe and it makes everything look so much nicer to look at. So I support 11,000 trees to be planted.

  29. smeagaleater10

#1 I agree with the plan to add 11,000 new trees to our neighbourhood for a couple reasons, here is some of them.
    A) I think that seeing a lot more than usual trees out would encourage people to get outside and enjoy nature’s beauty.
    B) I also think that having more trees around will improve everyone’s attitude for the better.
    C) And finally having more trees around will increase the air quality, (even though that’s just a side bonus)
#2 I think that different neighbourhoods have a different amount of tree coverage because some of then are less connected to nature. Also West Point grey is a richer neighbourhood than Strathcona that means they have bigger houses that means bigger lots and that allows than to grow way more trees.

  30. The Baconator

#2 I think that Strathcona has way less tree coverage because of where it is located. Parts of Strathcona are very close to downtown and as the population grows downtown grows more land is being taken over by the city for apartments or large buildings. Also a lot of Strathcona is clumped together and the lots are smaller creating less space for nature to grow.

  31. lordofthepies05

    1) I agree that we should be planting more trees so that we can keep our city very green. I think having trees is very important, A) because without them it would be hard to breath and B) they make a popular city like Vancouver look more welcoming and alive.

    2) I think the main reason why some city’s and places have more trees than others is because of the population. If there is more people, then there has to be more houses, and to make room for houses we need to cut down trees. I believe we should really try to stay mindful about the amount of forest we are taking down, and how that may contribute to problems like this.

  32. gamemaster2017

I personally think that more trees would be good for Vancouver it would help with all the smoke this summer and probably next summer too. it would help clear carbon out of the air and make parks more green and beautiful. also i think that there are less trees in richer neighborhood because: larger houses means a lack of space. it could provide food and habitats. better for birds and squirrels.

  33. Snort

I think it’s a great idea to add 11,000 trees to Vancouver because it will make the air quality better for all of us. I also think that we should have more trees because it will make Vancouver a nicer place and because of the forest fires and air pollution.

  34. the engineer

I agree with the plan to plant 11000 trees because it will make Vancouver a greener city. More trees make the air cleaner, they produce oxygen and they make habitats for squirrels and birds. Vancouver wants to be the greenest city by 2020 so this is a good way to start improving.

  35. sleepingsquirrel64

I 100% agree with the the plan to plant 11000 trees because first of all tees=oxygen and oxygen=life and second of all trees help with the problem of global warming.
trees are fun to climb and are a needed source of the stuff you are breathing right now.
-and most of all don’t forget the squirrels
    sleepingsquirrel64

  36. magicalnesses

I agree with the plan to add 1,100 trees. As the population grows more and more pollution will go into the air and the trees will help to create better air quality. Another benefit of doing this is wildlife. As we lose trees we lose wildlife like certain types of birds. Adding more trees should help not only us humans but the animals too. Finally the last benefit would be temperature. The more trees we have the more shade we have, this can help on hot summer days for helping to cool us down as well as our pets too.

  37. Snapshot1178

I think that west point gray has a lot more tree coverage then other placings because it has lots of parks like pacific spirit regional park and it is full of trees.

    SEPTEMBER 19, 2017 – 3:23 PM

    1. I agree with the idea of adding 11,000 trees to vancouver because our air is important and adding 11,000 trees will improve our air quality.

  39. Do it for da Hwin

    1. I believe that the idea of the 11,000 more trees are a great idea to inspirer others to care for the environment and boost the airs cleanliness.

    2. Its very interesting that other neighborhoods have less tree coverage but I think that its because of more housing in different, neighborhoods. Also on my block trees are rotting and getting older so they are getting chopped down.

  40. crum

1.I think that the idea of planting 11,000 more trees is a great idea because trees are super healthy for our environment and the air quality would be much much better

    2. I think that Strathcona has less tree coverage because its in the middle of a city so theres lots of pollution plus theres not much room

  41. ChickenGod

    1. I thing adding 11,000 trees is a really good idea because having more trees will improve our air quality and we might not need to worry much about air pollution because all of those trees will just be reducing the risk of having air pollution

  42. Joaquin

#2. I think Strathcona has less tree coverage because it is very Industrial and there are a lot of apartments so there is not much room for trees where Point Grey has a lot of homes that mostly have a tree in front so that mite explain why Point Grey has more tree coverage.

  43. Naruto Shippuden fan boy 1769

    1. I agree that there should be more trees and here are my top 7 reasons.

    1. Trees make our air cleaner as well as making new oxygen and reducing smog.
    2. Trees make the city look better.
    3. Animals, bugs, insects and etc depend on them.
    4. It doesn’t hurt to have more.
    5. Trees encourage people to play outside like me.
6.Trees can be grown and then cut down for resources like paper, wood and etc.
    7. Trees attract tourist to come here to camp or something.

  44. Mr.Blog

#1 I agree with having 11000 trees planted in Vancouver because
Vancouver would benefit from the trees in ways we wouldn’t think of like planting trees and shrubs can save you up to 25 percent on your energy bills.
Trees improve water quality by slowing and filtering rain water, and protecting aquifers and watersheds.
A single 30-meter-tall mature tree can absorb as much as 50 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year, the same amount as would be produced by an average car being driven over 40,000 kilometers! The same tree could also produce 6,000 pounds of oxygen in a year, which is enough to support at least two people. Trees placed near buildings can decrease air conditioning needs by 30%!
so basically trees cut down (no pun intended) on the prices of very expensive amenity’s, and they look cool. so having these trees planted would be a great contribution to our community.

  45. hockey 101

I believe that West Point Grey has more tree coverage because they have more open spaces and parks. Also the homes are a lot older and therefore the trees are bigger, with massive canopies. I think the program by the city, is a great idea.

  46. mystery

I agree with planting 11,000 trees in stathcona neighbourhood because trees turn carbon dioxide into oxygen during the day time. Let me explain how this happens, the trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through a process called photosynthesis. Also trees are home to many different animals, like birds, squirrels, chipmunks, ants and bugs. Animals are living creatures, we do not want thousands of animals not having a place to sleep and not having any shelter, for example it is like human beings living on the streets and we want every living thing to have a good future.
